What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a mood state characterized by apprehension and tension, in which an individual anticipates impending danger, catastrophe, or misfortune. The future threat may be real or imagined, internal or external. It may be an identifiable situation or a more vague fear of the unknown, such as a general sense of impending doom.

The body often mobilizes itself to meet the threat in ways that make us feel uncomfortable. Muscles become tense, hands sweat, breathing is faster, and the heart beats more rapidly.

Anxiety disorders include:

  • Panic disorder,
  • Agoraphobia,
  • Specific phobia,
  • Social phobia (shyness),
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),
  • Acute stress disorder (post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD), and
  • Generalized anxiety disorder (worry).
